Looking Forward After a Wild Year

Well, it finally happened. After over a decade of free-flowing money and unicorns becoming decacorns, the economy has tightened the screws (RIP SPAC market). As our founders and CEOs navigate the complex challenges of the current environment, we remain devoted to helping them get to the other side even stronger.

Our healthcare team looks forward to 2023, and we feel both inspired and grateful. We want to start 2023 off by giving back to our community and would like your help. Click below to select a charity and we will donate on your behalf. We wish you all a strong and healthy year ahead.

CEO Q&A

David Ebersman

Co-Founder & CEO, Lyra Health

Advice to founders in health tech?

One challenge in health tech is that the different functional leaders across clinical, product, sales, etc., are usually not fluent in each others’ languages. It took Lyra several years to get a team together that could communicate effectively and the company didn’t start working until that happened.

What are you most proud of regarding Lyra and its journey?

We published a peer-reviewed paper in 2022 showing that 89% of clients treated by Lyra had a clinically meaningful improvement in their depression or anxiety symptoms.

Most surprising learning about mental health since founding Lyra?

I have been surprised by how quickly societal attitudes about mental health have been changing, specifically the decline in stigma that has historically deterred people from seeking mental health care. We have been gratified to see consistently higher than expected utilization of our services, in particular by younger people.

Best holiday present that you gave this year?

I did not send any emails or Slacks to my teammates for the week between Christmas and New Year's.

Favorite thing about biotech? Most frustrating thing?

Favorite thing is that novel science and innovation seem limitless and better therapies are coming to market. Most frustrating thing is that companies and our industry continue to let failed concepts/hypotheses linger rather than shutting them down. Too much of a “hope springs eternal” mindset.

Top advice for entrepreneurs?

Only pursue working on something that you love doing. You never need a vacation from work because it becomes intertwined with your life and you fully embrace it.

An unexpected positive that has come out of this year?

Controlled clinical data showing early signs of improving Alzheimer’s disease (lecanemab). Once a small amount of progress has been made, it usually opens up the door to newer therapies that can have a more meaningful impact.

Recommend literally anything.

Be grateful in all circumstances. There is good in everything. You just have to look at it the right way.
